♦ THE ABILITY ♦

POWER: Ergokinesis: the ability to manipulate alternate forms of energy. Rather than strictly focusing on electrical currents from lightening or appliances, ergokinetics hone their skills on the physical electrons and static of the body. These are the electrical currents of the mind and muscle movements; corresponding to the vital points in the human body and altering the signal from that point for a short period of time. Understanding the kinetic flow of personal energy is a type of sixth sense. Blocking off one of these points can, for example, momentarily stall the connection between thinking to move your fingers and actually being able to. Ergokinesis scrambles that signal; heightening or tragically slowing the electronic movement in order to warp or block signals from the mind to the movement.

LIMITATIONS: All effects are temporary. The ability is primarily derived from physical contact. Because understanding this ability comes from extensive study and knowledge of the human form, at her current age Adena lacks the discipline to reach defined potential of her ability. Its highly unstable and as such, often unresponsive.

SIDE-EFFECTS: Muscles cramps and seizes are the primary difficulty in that signals blocked on one person can often ricochet back to her as a result due to the inability to differentiate. Extensive use forces quick exhaustion, meaning Adena requires more rest than most.

♦ THE FREEFORM ♦

When she was twelve, I got her case. A confused little girl from up north in Vancouver. The story goes that she accidentally stalled the circulation to her brother’s arm when he was wrestling with her; had her in a choke hold - jokingly, of course - and she fought back in...A new way. A proper knock to his arm and the whole thing suddenly went limp for a little bit. They had him in the hospital as soon as possible. And I was on a plane a day later to meet her. I remember when I first met her I thought...of course this lithe little girl is wrestling with all the guys, like that shouldn’t even be something we see as a challenge. He might have had a few years on her, but she didn’t care. She looks a lot like a person who just doesn’t care. That’s the thing you gotta break through. I don't think anyone's ever seen fear coming from those big blue eyes like I have.

Our daughter was always the tomboy type. She… Always got along with her brother, he's five years older than her. From the time she could walk she was following him everywhere. She grew up playing every sport made available to her; she was practically in love with baseball. She lived for every Blue Jays game we could get her to. It was fantastic- We, as a whole family, were fantastic. But the second she was taken to that school things changed. I can't really explain it, because it doesn't look like anything changed personally. Well... What she can do is definitely... A change.

I first met Adena not long after she was brought to Bellefonte. We had multiple therapy sessions over the course of three years; these started as mandatory instances when it was clear she wasn't adjusting to the change in life. And when that settled after the first year, they became completely voluntary. I would never see her on a regular basis, but she always knew where to find me when she needed to talk about something. I haven't seen or heard from her since a little while after she turned sixteen. Sessions were starting to get volatile, on her part. Nothing physical, but she was very prone to snapping for what felt like no reason. Eventually, she just stopped booking sessions. I never thought to pursue it.

I lived with her. It was literally the worst six months of my life. That girl is messy. I mean, you try having to clean up after a teenager who lives like a child. I get that some people take time to adjust to life without parents, or whatever, but this was like, ridiculous. She always used to “forget” to do her own laundry; can you believe that? When I figured out she was just saying it because she couldn’t be bothered cleaning her own clothes, I asked for a transfer. Did I still do her washing while it was pending? Well… Yeah. Otherwise it’d just pile up on the common room couch. Just like it did the first time I tried to stop helping her.

I took her for History last year. And the year before that. She was never a good student. Like… She’s smart. All the information is pretty much right there, but she doesn’t take it. Or maybe it’s more like she just doesn’t use it. She is the epitome of a person who doesn’t apply themselves. But the worst part of it is that she can, she just doesn’t want to. And unfortunately, there’s so little that can be done when it’s so clear someone just… Doesn’t want to do something.

Yeah, yeah, I know her. I met her the other night, but, that wasn’t the name she was going by. Took half my bottle of vodka and downed it like it didn’t even matter. I know, I know - the dorm rules are super strict on minor’s drinking - but I dunno how she got in in the first place. She didn’t look super young to me, and she totally didn’t act like it. She was dancing on table tops for ages. I didn’t see her at all in the morning. Smart; skipping out right before clean up. I bet she knew she was doing that, too.

Addie has never been the best at expressing her feelings. Even when she was little, she'd whisper it in your ear over ever letting it slip. And I think with time, that doesn't get any easier. She'll scream at you before she'll ever cry. She'll probably write you off in a second if you cross the line or anything like that. Sometimes it's like treading on a knife's edge with her, other times it's not so bad. When she told me she was being held back for another year she didn't seem phased by it. Angry, maybe. She sounded a little mad on the phone, which means she was a lot mad when she hung up.
