With the return of her friend, Emmett was beaming. Her gaze briefly moved to the woman she had walked away from, wondering just how badly that conversation had gone down. At the very least, the lawyer looked like she wasn't influenced by the conversation. She clicked off the phone's display, turning it over to her friend as she came back. Before she could think to ask how it had gone down, a question was posed her way, and Emmett didn't hesitate to look again.
"She so is." Her head cocked to the side. "It looks like she hates me more now." The mechanic's gaze returned to the lawyer, eyebrows quirking upward. It was so like Emmett to cause trouble, and now she felt like she was on a roll. She leaned forward, an arm wrapping around the back of Teddy's neck as she pressed a kiss to her lips. "Just to make it worse." She replied softly after, before she reached for the drink again. "Here. Have some of this fancy shit."
When Emmett heard her name said for the third time in a row, she knew she was getting to Olivia. Or at least asking the questions that were uncomfortable. Had the assistant not been at least a little invested in Teddy, she likely would have hung up by then, or at least defused the situation a little better. And now, she actually admitted to it. Out loud. Emmett's eyebrows skyrocketed at those words, and she instantly grinned.
"There we go," she replied, apparently satisfied with that within itself. "But you know that sounds like a shit excuse to me." And with that, the mechanic drew the phone away from her ear, pressing the end call button.
With a glance towards where Teddy was taken off to, she scrolled back to her own name in Teddy's contacts, sending herself a text consisting of random emojis.
Really, what was this girl's deal? Emmett squeezed her eyes shut, letting out a sigh as Olivia tried to break things down for her. It sounded like a load of denial, and there was no quicker way to frustrate the blonde. A quick glance over her shoulder, and she tried to catch sight of wherever Teddy was dragged off to, but her attention quickly shifted as the paralegal offered her final statement.
"What's unfair is liking someone and not giving them the respect or honesty to let them know." She argued back. "I've been to the office enough times to see how you look at her. I'm not dumb, as much as you like to think I am."
Emmett's eyebrows furrowed when possibly the lamest response came through the line. She waited briefly in case anything were to follow, but of course not. She raised the glass to her lips again, taking another sip of the alcohol provided to her by an ex thanks to the woman they were talking about. "I'm sure it isn't, but I'm trying to help you out here." As she spoke, she waved her glass a little, letting the liquid slosh around in the wide glass provided.
Getting her to admit anything seemed pointless, given the cramped time frame she was working with. "Like, are you even out of the closet? Just do something - or someone else is gonna take her." She paused, only briefly considering her next line. "And it'll probably be me."
To the mechanic, she gave sound reasoning and a straightforward question. For it to be returned with a flat tone and a fake apology had her groaning. Any possible interest the lawyer had in this woman was lost on Emmett, but her curiosity kept her pushing forward. "Look. I'm with your boss at a bar and every woman in a mile radius wants to sleep with her." Emmett shot back, unafraid of the hint of annoyance in her tone. "So what's your deal?"
She leaned back in her chair. "I mean, it's pretty obvious you're into her. So why aren't you doing something about it before someone else does?"
It rang for far too long, at least in Emmett's opinion, and she hadn't quite planned out a voice message if that were the case. She tapped the glass against the bar top, mouth scrunching to one side before someone finally picked up. The mechanic sat up straight. "Oh, hey. This isn't Teddy. It's Emmett. I took her phone." That part must have been obvious, but she felt the need to point it out.
"So like... what's your deal? And don't fuck around with me 'cause I only have a couple minutes."
Two minutes and a Hennessy. One hand remained on the glass while the other flipped through the contacts on her phone. Hazel eyes glanced towards her friend and the woman likely speaking unkind things about the mechanic. Hopefully Teddy would be able to see past whatever it was that the girl could think to say. There she did find her own name under the lawyers contacts, and while that brought a grin to her features, she kept scrolling until she hit a different number she assumed was in her personal phone.
Clicking call, she pressed the ear to her phone, her other hand bringing the glass to her lips as it rang.
Emmett thought to protest the moment a whining tone escaped this girl's mouth, but before she could, Teddy gave agreed for the time asked of her. A frown tugged at the corner of her mouth, but Emmett did her best to fight it towards something more positive, especially when the lawyer managed to score a free drink out of her.
A gentle touch against her cheek did everything to make her grin again, and she caught those bright blue eyes, not even looking at her former companion. "I'll have a shot of Hennessy. Top shelf." Without missing a beat, she turned her head, lips pressing into Teddy's palm. "Two minutes."
And as if she had almost forgotten, her eyebrows quirked upwards. "Oh, can I borrow your phone? Mine's dead."
Caught up in her own story, Emmett had completely missed the person approaching them. It was only when a voice cut into their conversation did she even notice the other presence. Eyebrows immediately furrowed at what seemed like a really weak approach. Who shares a shot anyway? Her gaze turned towards the source as she requested the lawyer's attention, and Emmett felt the falter in her grin. It almost fell completely.
Because she did recognize the face. Vaguely, but enough to recall the night they had spent together.
When she caught Teddy's eyes, she tried to offer something of an apologetic look through raised eyebrows and an awkward smile. "Do you gotta take her away from me? I'm sort of attached." She joked lightly, though her hand lost the grip it had on the lawyer.
Really, it was one of the moments in her life that really scared Emmett. She knew how angry the ocean could be, and she knew how lucky she was to get through something like that, especially because of her own stupidity to begin with. Her shoulders shrugged up and down a little as she laughed. "Hey, sometimes you just gotta make sure for yourself, you know?"
As the drinks came to the table, Emmett immediately put her hands around the warm mug of coffee. Oh, how she needed that. "Yeah." Sitting here continuously smelling the food was making her stomach grow impatient. She looked to the server, offering a smile. "Can I get the waffles? And a side of homefries?" As per the recommendation of the woman sitting across from her. The mechanic turned her attention back to her, eyes on the summit of whipped cream before she reached a hand forward, finger swiping just a little bit of the fluffy substance before sticking it into her mouth.
The idea alone had Emmett laughing, because she could think of no other person that would suggest such a thing. She recalled what her lawyer had warned her of, and although she'd been offering playful banter over text messages, she didn't think this warranted as anything too reckless. "Fuck yes!" And just like that, Emmett was out of her seat.
She really had no idea how to find the person responsible, given that even the police were struggling to put together the pieces, but she determined that a little adventure would be well worth it to both of them. If Emmett didn't need the distraction, Alex probably did. "Let's get out of here."
Emmett kept a safe distance as Alice went through a closet, but hazel eyes remained watchful as the brunette set aside an article. Briefly, she wondered how she got herself into this, but the spark of a threat kept the mechanic on her toes. She put her hands in her pockets, rocking back and forth on her heals as she laughed. "I'll come up with something more cruel, then." Though really, she trusted her friend wouldn't go shouting to the world that Emmett Coupland dressed up for a night.
Slowly, she stepped closer, hands pressing lightly to the brunettes hips as she shifted her weight onto her toes to look over her. "So what made you realized you liked doing this?" She asked, genuinely curious.
The lawyer made a good point, as always. While Emmett didn't put in an effort to follow up with people, she also wasn't entirely blinded to the emotions they might be feeling. How she chose to deal with that was an entirely different issue within itself. But an arm around her neck had the mechanic grinning, and she happily ignored any sinking in her stomach at the possibility of a more serious subject. Her arm moved easily around Teddy's waist, glad to keep her close.
"Oh Jesus." Because of course she had plenty of them to share, it was only a matter of figuring out which one. Her nose crinkled as she thought before she let out a laugh. "Okay, okay. So this one time I was just hanging out for a bit, but I might have had a few too many beers already." Because what good story didn't start with already being drunk? "And this girl starts talking to me, and I realize that she looks sort of familiar, but I can't figure out where. It goes like all night until we're about to leave and another girl approaches us and starts like yelling at her about cheating and shit. And I realize that like a week before I had seen a photo of her, 'cause I had slept with the girl yelling at us a week before and it was on her nightstand." Emmett shook her head. "In my defense at the time I didn't realize either of them were in a relationship. 'Cause that's a little fucked up."
In part, Emmett had half expected to hear that the lawyer had never set foot into a gay bar before. She was glad to hear she was wrong, but amusement still struck her features when she discovered that it was her first in the country. Loads of questions filtered into her mind, like if they served tea instead of beer, but before her mouth could catch her thoughts, she felt the pressure of a finger against her shoulder.
A laugh escaped her before she tilted the glass up, downing the contents without care of a chaser. Her jaw clenched at the taste before she set the glass back down. "Like I said, usually someone will come up and talk to me." Where it lead from there was usually unplanned but inevitable. The mechanic had a history.
"They're probably all dying seeing me next to you though." And with that, she pressed an index finger to Teddy's shoulder with a mimicked motion. "If one of them comes up, you're definitely my girlfriend." Not that it was entirely believable that she'd have a girlfriend at all.
Don't be an idiot. Emmett grinned at the explanation. Simple yet effective. She had to wonder if the guy ended up giving up or actually found someone to take his case.
Her forefinger and thumb rotated the small glass, eyes following the path that Teddy's made. There were a lot of women looking.
"No." The mechanic explained shortly, letting out a little laugh. "I mean, usually someone comes up to you, but this is something else." A thought creeped into her mind, and hazel eyes snapped back to the lawyer. "Have you ever been to a bar like this before?"
