The Bellefonte Organization was from the day of its birth meant to be a sanctuary for specially gifted children, teenagers and adults. Then as the organization thrived, it became a school - specialized in training young mutants and was renamed "Bellefonte Academy". Hidden from the general population, the school was then built in the mountain area close to Kalispell, Montana.
Because mutants cover such a low percentage of the population, it's no secret that such a difference would be frowned upon and even feared. The mutant society managed to remain hidden, with great help of the government until June 2014. A video was then released on YouTube of a group of mutant students training and mutants has since then become known to the public.
The next few years was troubling and the government shipped government officials in order to keep the mutant, and human, population safe. Since then, though, mutants have become a accepted minority in the united states - and more countries are following in their steps.
The school was then relocated from Kalispell, Montana in 2016 to Stagfort, Oregon, Stagfort becoming a metropolis for mutant communities and their supporters.
The school itself, though, work like most other boarding schools. The school offers free lodging and food, as well as a variety of classes, clubs, sports and training sessions. Mutants come to the school to learn how to control their abilities and won't be able to leave until they do.
When someone's ability manifest, usually around the age of eleven to sixteen, a recruiter is sent out to collect the mutant and bring them back to the school where they can properly learn to hone their abilities by professional staff members.
► THE ACADEMY
Founded in 1861 by Ichabod Bellefonte, Bellefonte Academy has a long standing as the premier mutant training school. Throughout its illustrious history, it has been producing the finest individuals, all prepared and trained to integrate and contribute to the world around them. This fine institution has become the school to emulate, with top of the line training programs and an extremely high scholastic reputation. The fine men and women who walk these halls are destined to become the leaders of not only the Mutant Community, but the community in general. As our motto inscribes: “uti donum pro omnibus”; use your gift for all.
► YOUR EDUCATION
All students are enrolled upon their manifestation. Our network of trained individuals seeks out any and all gifted individuals upon their manifestation and escorts them to Stagfort, where they are given the finest education. Our faculty and staff are drawn not only from our own pool of gifted alumni, but even from outside, everyday individuals. We seek to hire those with skills, talents, and training that can benefit our fine institution and provide the highest education. This goes all the way from basic education to the college. Our college program ranks in the top ten universities in all national rankings.
Bellefonte Academy follows all non-discrimination laws. We do not discriminate in hiring based on race, class, sex, gifted status, or any other unique differences that could be present. Slight preference is given to various gifted, as we wish to create a safe haven for those, as that has always been a founding purpose.
Our trained staff are ready to handle any and all students. In addition to the finest teachers and professors, we have several counselors and psychiatrists on hand to address the unique issues raised by gifted individuals. We also keep a well-trained and well-equipped security staff on hand at all times. These individuals are prepared to protect gifted from outside threats as well as to deal with any internal issues.
► YOUR STUDENT BODY
Stagfort takes in every gifted individual in America and the rest of the world. Our student body ranges in age from eleven all the way to twenty-five, and there are even some non-traditional students participating in our fine college program.
At manifestation, which occurs as early as eleven and as late as sixteen, the student is escorted to our fine institution. All gifted are mandated by the government to receive training at one of the accredited institutions. They are recorded on all official documentation with gifted status, and are thus required to undergo training at an institution before integrating with the rest of the society. This is, of course, for the good of all involved.
Upon completion of traditional secondary schooling or completion of GED requirements, a student is allowed to enroll in either Bellefonte’s College program or another. An additional training requirement must also be fulfilled: accredited trainers must determine that a student has sufficient enough control of their powers.
► STUDENT ACCOMMODATION
All students are provided free food and lodging.
The food is prepared on site and meets all national standards regarding nutrition and balance.
The dormitories have been recently renovated to provide the finest living situation possible. Students are grouped by age and are expected to share a unique four-room suite with three other gifted individuals. All are fully furnished, and each student is provided with a laptop for academic and personal use.
► FUNDING
The school is mostly self-sufficient, thanks to excellent investment strategies by skilled mutants. Donations are still accepted via successful alumni, and are, of course, encouraged. Additional funding is also provided via the government through specific grants and programs.
All education of students is covered via funding. Any and all students that require funding for whatever reason are provided a weekly allowance through the school; often they are employed by the school to complete various jobs around campus to compensate.
► Stagfort, OREGON
Welcome to Stagfort, a fictional town located by the coast of Oregon, US. A large city and commercial city. We're proud to be the host of Bellefonte Academy, as well as other fine institutions serving our local young people.
Our community awareness of our gifted population is growing rapidly, as is our acceptance of all the fine people that come from Bellefonte Academy. Many of our businesses and services are uniquely designed to make life easier for students and staff of Bellefonte Academy. We are striving to create one of the most integrated communities for gifted individuals in the world. Many graduates of Bellefonte therefore choose to live in Stagfort.
Our law enforcement works in tandem with the school to deal with any and all mutant related incidents. We strongly discourage students from openly flaunting their abilities except during sanctioned community events, but we promise that we will work with the school to handle any and all cases.
We want to create a special place for our special residents.
► THE SCHOOLS
Bellefonte Academy was the first school of its kind, but as the gifted population grew, several sister schools were developed. Each of these schools operates independently with Bellefonte Academy, though they often work in tandem or utilize similar practices in education and training. Most are even satellite schools closely connected with their American sister.
England -> St. Bethany Town: Manchester, North West Status: Active. General Information: St. Bethany is one of the schools that are the most similar to Bellefonte, both when it comes to academics and the way things are run. They are a bit more uptight in a sense of of overall discipline, but all in all, there's not many differences.
Romania -> St. Cadou Town: Brasov, Transylvania Status: Active. General Information: The Romanian school is one of the most secluded schools, both in area and communication. Focusing mostly on art, music, inventing or a combination of all, the students are expected to excel in one of these. The school itself is considered extremely strict and has high expectations of the students both with their abilities and their academics.
Japan -> Sainō Town: Tokyo, Honshu Status: Active. General Information: The Japanese school has a stronger focus on community and working together, rather than going solo. Their students are more skilled in using their powers in a group, rather than going one on one. They are on the same academic level as Bellefonte.
India -> The Ishvaras Development Center Town: Mumbai, Maharashtra Status: Active. General Information: The Indian "Center", as it prefers to be called, has been emphasizing the superiority of its students nearly since its inception. The students are strongly encouraged to use their power to advance themselves, and are often those that strive toward becoming successful. Its graduates are considered to be among the finest in the country.
Canada -> Academy of Acton Vale Town: Acton Vale, Quebec Status: Newly Active. General Information: The Canadian school was known to be a lot more lax than Bellefonte and was known for its social students, but most of the information got lost as the school was burned down in the beginning of 2014. It has since rebuilt to the point where it still hosts a small, but active student body and staff.
Australia -> Sir Henry Barnet Academy Town: Darwin, Northern Territory Status: Active. General Information: The Australian school focuses most activity out in the open than piling their students up inside a school. Sir Henry Barnet is probably one of the more free spirited and most focused on exercising and connecting with nature out of all the schools.
Africa -> Le Roux Academy Town: Cape Town, South Africa Status: Active. General Information: Le Roux is the only academy for mutants in the whole continent of Africa. Diverse in many different traditions and cultures, they strive in immense self discipline, academics, athletics, and seeing that each student is able to take on the road ahead in the future.
South America -> La Delgadillo Academia Town: Santiago, Chile Status: Active. General Information: The La Delgadillo Academia is rumored to host schooling for some of the most troubled mutant students. Whether or not these rumors are true have never been proven. But it's said that the worst students are sent there for rehabilitation.
While the state and the world isn't fictional, the town our roleplay takes place in, is. It's a fictional town set on the coast of Oregon.
► WHAT TIME PERIOD IS THIS SET IN?
We operate at the same time as real life, so whatever day today is when you're sitting in the chair, is the day our roleplay takes place.
► WHO IS THE CURRENT PRESIDENT?
Whomever is sitting in the office right now in the US.
► HOW MUCH DOES THE GENERAL PUBLIC KNOW ABOUT MUTANTS?
Pretty much everything. They've been living around mutants for quite a while, and the "secret" didn't stay secret for long, not with anxious teenagers running around.
► HOW MUCH DOES THE GOVERNMENT KNOW ABOUT MUTANTS?
Pretty much everything. The schools and the government are in regular contact with one another, and the government has provided the school with funding. Occasionally they'll work together, and a few graduates wind up in government positions. There's also the government officials who work closely with the school and the mutant community.
► ARE THERE OTHER SCHOOLS LIKE BELLEFONTE?
There are! There are several schools out in the world, and the ones currently associated with the Bellefonte Academy is St. Bethany in England, Sainō in Japan, St. Cadou in Romania, Le Roux Academy in South Africa, Sir Henry Barnet Academy in Australia, La Delgadillo Academia in South America and Academy of Acton Vale in Canada.
► DO ALL CHARACTERS WITH POWERS HAVE TO BE TRAINED AT A SCHOOL?
Yes.
► CAN MY CHARACTER AVOID RECRUITERS FOR MORE THAN 2-3 WEEKS?
Short answer: probably not. Longer answer: the recruiters are trained to find mutants, and they have a good mixture of powers among them, including detection powers. There is more information on this in the corresponding thread.
► CAN MY CHARACTER RESIST RECRUITING?
Technically, yes. But the school has agreement with the government, and untrained mutant children are considered dangerous to society. In addition, it's considered dangerous for the child themself. So the government usually leans on one idea or the other, and most parents agree. The few that don't might find themselves facing court (and as always, if you want this, let us know).
SCHOOL POLICIES
► CAN A STUDENT GO INTO TOWN?
This depends. If a student has control over their power or it doesn't affect outside people much, then definitely. If the student's a danger or in trouble, then no. Most students under 16 aren't allowed to leave without conditions though.
► IS THERE A CURFEW?
Yes. For students under the age of 16, they have to be inside before 9PM, for students under 18, 11PM and for students above the age of 18, 12AM. Lights out is generally enforced around 10PM, but there are sometimes exceptions.
► WHAT HAPPENS AT GRADUATION?
Depends. If the student is in complete control of their powers, then they are free to go seek higher education or a job elsewhere. Many stay, since they've grown to know people and it's a very mutant friendly place. Bellefonte also operates as a university, so education can continue there for quite a while.
► WHAT ABOUT PETS?
Service animals are allowed if needed. Outside of that, it needs to fit in a small to medium cage to be allowed. usually nothing bigger than a bird or a snake or something along those lines.
► During breaks (Such as summer vacation, Christmas, etc) does my character remain at the school, or do they go home?
Whichever they want, unless there's major power issues or disciplinary problems.
POWERS/APPLICATIONS/ETC
► What's the policy on LGBT characters?
We accept chars all across the spectrum, both gender wise and on the Kinsey scale. At least one of our staff is really well trained in LGBT relations and often handles that end of things, but overall, we're really accepting of that sort of thing and actually encourage it among our characters and members.
► What if I want to do something weird or different with a character?
Ask the staff. Most of the time, we'll work with you and get your idea to work. Sometimes, the idea just won't work with the site. The more we know ahead of time, the more we can help.
► What age does mutants manifest their powers?
Usually, powers are manifested between the age of 11 and 15, sometimes later (usually that needs a heads up for the staff). This usually happens when the person reaches puberty and their powers start growing.
► Why is "This" power limited/banned/not allowed for my character?
Usually this is because the power would break the world. That's not necessarily literal in the sense of, like, cracking the Earth in half. That's more that we're going for a more casual setting that's focused on social interaction, with powers that are a little lighter. So some powers don't quite fit. Think more Heroes or Misfits than X-Men.
► How long does it take to get applications accepted?
Generally? Pretty quick. We've been doing this for a while now and generally know what to look for. Sometimes we're busy and it takes a while. Sometimes there's something in the app which requires staff to talk to one another.
► What usually holds up apps then?
It's almost always power. We need to know that you know how your power works and that it doesn't break the world we're working with. If it's not that, it's the recruiting process. You WILL be recruited within two to three weeks, with very few exceptions. If it's not those two, then it's usually "we need to see a little more here," which doesn't happen all that often
► Why do we need face claims?
It's more of a matter of creating an overall aesthetic. Most of the founders really like it, and some of us think of it as casting the character. But it's mostly so everyone fits in and looks right. And so those of us that are graphically inclined can make pretties
► How do I find a face claim? And can I use "them"?
Most of the staff and many members know of sites you can use to look up faces. There's probably someone out there who looks like what you're thinking of for a character. As far as who you can use, the rules are fairly clear. If they get paid for taking pictures, you're probably safe.
► What's the limit on characters?
If there was a limit, most of our staff would lose it. We're pretty loose with regards to how many characters you have, but if we feel like you cannot handle another char, we'd probably step in and let you know. But in general, if you can handle it, you can have as many as quickly as you want.
SITE
► Can we start or offer up plot ideas?
Sure! We love plot! Some of us love it too much. Feel free to offer a suggestion for either large plot events or smaller, mini-events. We often take them and run with them.
► How large can my avatar/signature be?
We don't have any specific requests for either of these, but we recommend using 500x300/250/200 for signature as longer width might resize your signature and make it look odd. For avatars, we recommend 200x200/150x150 avatars as they too resize if the image is too large.
► Who's the staff?
Mel, the administrator and owner, and then there's Eddie, the better half of the staff.
This is the information on the housing of Bellefonte Academy. All students who live on campus will have their rooms assigned here. All characters above the age of 18 can decide whether or not they want to live on campus. All students below the age of 18 has to live on campus or at a family home.
If you are opting to have your character live off campus, then you will simply be in the "Residences" area. At a later date we may open this up to districts if we get several people, but for now, you're simply to do your own thing in there.
Each dorm has four bedrooms each with their own bathroom and a shared living room with a kitchenette. The living room comes with a couch, a television, a table with four chairs and kitchen accessories. (And of course whatever else the students/teachers living there have brought)
