The two seemed to settle into a comfortable silence. That was often what happened - she had never been good at carrying a conversation and he was rarely one to force one. Not for long, at least.
But then he spoke. Green eyes shifted to the side. Studying him. Did she expect a laugh? A smile? Anything that would indicate him joking? Perhaps. But then again, he wouldn't joke about that.
She didn't give herself a moment to think about it; "Yeah."

When she looked at him, Carter only stared back. There was nothing about him that indicated that he were joking. It was a very simple question, and there were only two answers he was willing to accept.
He thought he'd be waiting in another bout of silence, but she was kind enough to cut it off before it could grow. Her answer, as simple as she expected.
Was it the answer he expected?
"Outstanding." Carter declared then, smiling for her uncontrollably.

It was puzzling. Not only because he'd asked, but for the way he reacted to her answer, too.
He seemed more relaxed. More open. It was odd to her, but she didn't dislike it.
"You've... Changed." It was an observation, not an accusation.

Change was either good or bad; there was no in between. Carter couldn't shake the thought and he knew he had to press her for more information, but not without a preface.
"It's been years. You've done... What you've done here." The extent of that, he didn't know. She glossed over it pretty easily, like it was boring or predictable. "I've done a lot, too." The details of which he really didn't want to get into.
"Is changing a bad thing?" Carter asked her then.

He'd made a valid point. Even if she'd wanted to, which she didn't, she didn't have anything to say that'd counter his point.
"It doesn't have to be." In this case, she supposed it wasn't. It was different, though. "And it isn't." She added, more for his sake than for her own. "It's just something... new to get used to."

There were a lot of people in this world who feared change. To an extent, everyone had to grow up, and they likely both knew that. Carter had asked because her words struck something in him. Even he had to admit that he liked changing her mind.
"It's the same for me." He pointed out then, eyes glancing ahead. "You might think you haven't changed much, but you have. It's commendable." Most change was, especially when it was for the better.

Her first instinct was to brush him off like she often did when the spotlight was on her, but for once, she didn't. Even she knew that she'd changed. If not much, at least a little.
"I could say the same for you, you know." Still, she shrugged. It was easy for her to change the direction of the light. It was second nature by now.
She wondered if he was even aware of how much he'd changed. How, from what she'd seen, he often went home alone. Or maybe that was her perception of it. Maybe she hadn't paid enough attention.
It made her curious to find out. But she didn't dare ask. Maybe she didn't really want to know.
"Do you like Stagfort?" She settled on instead.

Carter shrugged his shoulders at the notion of a shared change. He knew he couldn't deny it, because she absolutely wasn't wrong. But he was good enough not to get into the topic. At least, not yet. He didn't want to put a potential dampener on their discussions here.
And then she asked about Stagfort. He scrunched his nose up instinctively, but he didn't totally mean it.
"It's... I mean, what is there, really?" He asked her, waving his hand in dismissal, "It's a town. I'm from the city." He could find comfort in the familiar company, but for him, that was probably the best part of it. "It's... Humble, though. So there's that." And that would be the closest thing to a compliment she'd get.

She chuckled; "Only you would call this town humble." Stagfort was much, much larger than what Kalispell had ever been. It had a lot more mutants, too.
Still, she supposed it couldn't be compared to where he was from. Wherever that was.
She leaned back again, fingers combing lazily through her brown locks. "I think I like the idea of it more than the place itself." Aside from her family, she had little reason to be here. The place hardly mattered.

A quick stop by his bedroom saw Noah swap out his wrinkled dress shirt and jacket for a simple pair of blue jeans and a dark gray shirt with 'STAGFORT POLICE DEPARTMENT' emblazoned on the front. The casual attire was the norm after work, at least on the seemingly rare occasions he was home early enough to bother with anything other than sleepwear. Part of him never truly grew comfortable with the suits and ties detectives commonly wore.
"Hey Lux." Noah called from the stairs as he descended and immediately headed for the kitchen. Shedding the physical remnants of his work day had already begun setting his mind at ease allowing him to focus on the task at hand. "I'm going to get dinner started, can you let Lily out of her room?" He called again before giving a frown and muttering to himself. "Poor girl's probably going stir crazy."

"Anything is humble compared to where I grew up." Carter pointed out quickly. But even he could admit that everything stood up far better than Kalispell.
The idea of it? He raised his eyebrows in a quick twitch at that. That had him musing, but they were things he'd have to keep to himself for now. Because sure enough, they were joined by another. Or rather, his calling voice from the kitchen.
Glancing back towards her, he had to smile. "Who is Lily and why do you keep her locked up?"

She was about to answer, though was cut off as she heard the voice of her father from the hallway. A sigh, followed by a smile and the brunette pushed herself out of the couch.
"Yeah, sure." She called back, green eyes turning to the blonde. Her smile widened. She jerked her thumb back towards a door at the back of the living room. "Open that door and you'll find out." She stepped to the side, allowing him room to pass her if he decided to take the bait.
She supposed it was silly, really. It wasn't much of a big deal, though she wouldn't mind seeing his expression when opening the door to find the hyperactive fennec fox pet her father kept. Who, apparently, only liked her father, too. The feeling was mutual, though, so she supposed she couldn't be too mad.
